Books Worth Reading is a catalogue of the books written by TED speakers — 1,278 quality-verified books by 620 speakers at the current count — each paired with the talk its author gave. It started as one reader's list: if the most interesting people in the world have written books, those books are a good place to start reading.
Every speaker page lists the books that speaker has written and links them to their TED talk. Every book page shows the paired talk, the publisher's description and where to buy the book. Browse by speaker, by category, by award collections such as Nobel and Pulitzer winners, or through the editorial reading lists.
Nothing enters the catalogue on a name match alone. Each book needs a verified author match, a real publisher description from Google Books, Open Library or Wikipedia, a verified cover and a canonical category. A manual wrong-author audit then removes namesake and foreword-only credits — it excluded 188 books before the data study was published. What remains is a list you can trust to be the speaker's own work.
Our data study, "The Book Came First", analysed 1,326 quality-verified books by 630 TED speakers, a snapshot taken on July 2, 2026. 57% of the 1,144 TED-speaker-written books with reliable publication dates were published before the speaker's first TED talk. The book is rarely the merchandise that follows a famous talk; more often it is the audition that earned the stage. The study and the full dataset behind it (CSV or JSON) are free to cite with attribution.
The speaker directory lists every TED speaker with a published book, alphabetically. The category pages rank each topic's books by popularity. The reading lists are hand-picked and themed. And the complete dataset is downloadable in full, with a ready-made citation.
