Of the 1,144 catalogued books with reliable dates, 657 (57%) existed before the author first stepped on a TED stage — the median book preceded the talk by a year. For the 43% that followed the first talk, the average lag was 4.8 years: the post-talk book exists, but it arrives on publishing time, not virality time.
The genre most associated with "TED-talk books" — personal development — is sixth. Science & Technology alone accounts for roughly a quarter of everything TED speakers have published.

Talk-timing analysis compares each speaker's first TED talk date with each book's publication year (n = 1,144 books with both dates). Third-party ratings data is deliberately excluded: coverage in our sources is too sparse to be representative. The catalogue grows continuously; this page reports a frozen snapshot so the numbers stay consistent with this methodology.

Every book passes a quality gate: a verified author match, a real publisher description from Google Books, Open Library or Wikipedia, a verified cover and a canonical category. A manual wrong-author audit then excluded 188 books whose listed author was a namesake of the speaker or a foreword-only credit.
